Field Trips and Home Reading

Hello,

Just a note to update you on Division 6 happenings.
Upcoming field trips
We are planning two field trips in November. On November 10th we will be visiting the Chapman Creek Hatchery to study and view spawning salmon and the ecology of the stream. Students will have an opportunity to fish for trout. Trout cost an additional $4 each and poles are supplied. If your child is going to fish for trout please send them with a small cooler with a cold pack. Transportation will be by parent drivers/volunteers so if you are available, please consider volunteering.
On November 29 we will be going to the Vancouver Aquarium with Ms. Valenta’s grade 2-3 class. Transportation will be by ferry and chartered bus. Forms for both of these trips will be sent home next week.
Home Reading
As you know there is not a large homework load for my class. Instead, I am hoping that students are reading at home. This is something that, as parents, we sometimes struggle with. Please set aside some time for your child to read at home every evening. I have included an article that may help spark reluctant readers.
Also, don’t count out comics, magazines or graphic novels. Reading should not be a chore at home. Students will be working hard at school to improve their reading so try to make home reading an enjoyable and stress free routine. If possible reading to them is also an excellent way to model pace and tone. And don’t forget to check out the public library.
Children should be reading something at their level: not too easy, not too difficult. Have them read for you and if they are struggling with more than one or two words in each sentence, the reading may be too difficult. Re-reading their favourite stories is okay too. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about reading at home
